Hypnosis Treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Olafur S. Palsson, Psy.D., Research Associate, Department of Medicine, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill states that the standard medical methods currently used to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are of some help to the majority of people with the disorder. However, up to half of IBS sufferers are dissatisfied with the results of standard medical management, and many continue to have frequent symptoms after seeing doctors about them.

In recent years, other alternatives have been sought to help these individuals. There has been growing interest in the possibility of using the mind to soothe the symptoms of IBS. Mental states clearly affect the way the gut behaves in people with IBS, and in fact, also in people who have no gastrointestinal problems.

Although IBS is probably not caused by stress directly, it is well established from research that psychological stress increases the symptoms of many people who have the disorder.

If the mind can have such a powerful negative influence on the intestinal tract, it would seem to make sense that the mind could be used to have a positive or calming influence on the intestines. Several psychological methods to treat IBS symptoms have been tested in formal research studies, including biofeedback, cognitive therapy, psychodynamic (insight-oriented) therapy, and hypnosis treatment. It is unclear, to date, which of these psychological treatment methods is most effective, for they have generally not been tested side by side.

However, cognitive therapy and hypnosis treatment have had the highest reported success rates in repeated formal research studies, with improvement seen in 80% or more of all treated patients in some studies.

Hypnosis for IBS

The results of the first formal research study on hypnosis treatment for IBS were published in the Lancet in 1984. The investigators, Dr. Peter Whorwell and his group in Manchester in England, reported remarkable success from a seven-session hypnosis treatment of 15 patients with severe IBS problems who had not responded to any other treatment. All 15 patients treated with seven sessions of hypnotherapy improved, with dramatic improvement seen in all the central symptoms of IBS.

The researchers furthermore showed that this therapeutic impact was not merely due to belief or expectancy of improvement, because a comparison group of 15 IBS patients who were instead treated with the same number of psychotherapy sessions and also received placebo pills (pills with no medication) showed only slight improvement.

This was a powerful demonstration of the impact hypnotherapy could have on IBS, and led to considerable subsequent interest in this approach to IBS treatment. Since this first report, more than a dozen other published research reports have confirmed that hypnosis treatment is effective in treating IBS.

Generally, the treatment procedures reported in the literature consists of 4 to 12 sessions (shorter treatment than 7 sessions may be a bit less effective). Hypnosis sessions are typically conducted weekly or once every other week, last 30-40 minutes and consist of induction of hypnosis followed by deep relaxation and the use of gut-directed imagery and suggestions. Patients are commonly given short CD or audiotape hypnosis home exercises to use during the course of treatment in addition to the sessions with the clinicians.

The experience to date may be outlined as follows:

Reported success rates range from approximately 70-95% in all studies with any significant number of patients [for example, in the work of the Manchester group in England and our studies.

The improvement enjoyed from this treatment often lasts at least two years after the end of treatment .

All major IBS symptoms improve from this kind of treatment (abdominal pain, diarrhea/constipation, and bloating).

There are some indications that individuals with certain characteristics are somewhat less likely to benefit from this kind of treatment: People with very little hypnotizability (perhaps 15% of all people), persons with psychiatric disorders, and maybe (according to one report) males with diarrhea-predominant type of IBS.

This treatment can be effective also when people are treated in groups.

In addition to effects on physical symptoms, the treatment commonly improves psychological well being and life functioning substantially and can have long-term positive effects in reducing disability and health care costs and improving the quality of life of IBS patients.

1. Shop in the Natural Health Food section of the supermarket to find better food choices. Always select the organic products whenever they are available.

2. Start in the fresh food section of the supermarket. In fact if you shop around the perimeter of the store you will end up making healthier food choices.

3. Because vegetables lose their vitamins and other nutrients very rapidly, buy only the freshest ones.

4. Quick frozen vegetables can be more nutritious than fresh ones that have been on the store shelves for a few days.

Did you know that some laser printer cartridges are worth over $20.00 each? Many people are throwing money down the drain. I'll tell you how you can make money or even start a part or full time business. The cartridge remanufacturing business is growing by leaps and bounds. There are now Franchises setting up businesses across the US By the thousands. Empty ink and toner cartridges are in high demand and the demand is growing rapidly even some of the small ink cartridge empties are selling for $6.00. Some empty toner cartridges are worth over $20.00. There are companies that specialize in buying empty toner cartridges. You can easily find them by doing a search on Goggle or any Search Engine. Just type in Cartridge recyclers and several will show up. Some of the companies will even give you a business plan and tell you the best methods for collecting the empties. Typically they will buy in small or large quantities. Sign up is free and they will have a price list that you can print out. This is one business that you can start with virtually no money.

Not all cartridges are suitable for recycling. Type one has the print head built into the cartridge this is the one to collect as they are the expensive ones suitable for recycling .You can tell these by the brass colored electronics on the back of the cartridge and the brass colored print head Type two is just a plastic container with a sponge in it. Ink is injected into the sponge these are very inexpensive to produce and several companies make compatible cartridges that is very inexpensive. In the last few years the real estate title industry has been in the news a lot more and usually it is not because of the good things they are doing. Most of the news has revolved around the illegal kickbacks and gifts they are giving to brokers in return for more business being sent their way. The latest story is from Washington and involves homeowners suing title agencies for providing illegal gifts to brokers and passing on extra charges to the customers, http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/289185_title19.html. These stories have become far too common and in the Internet age it is only a matter of time before anyone who is in need of title insurance will be able to find similar stories. Because of the increased knowledge title insurance providers should take heed and change their ways. There is no way to hide this information from consumers and those title companies who are engaging in these illegal practices will pay the price and rightly so.

Before I go any further I need to discuss exactly what Title Insurance is. Title Insurance is an insurance policy to guarantee your ownership against claims, liens or judgments that might arise after your purchase or loan has been completed. This practice has been ingrained in the title industry and the fact that customers were unaware of it has made it highly profitable and difficult to discover. That is until recently. One of the biggest reasons for this is because of the increased availability of information because of the internet. Consumers now have instant access to all the information they want with a couple of clicks of their mouse. Title companies can no longer hide what they are doing from their customers.

15 Minute Investor Pt. 1

Investing in foreclosures for Resale is not so different from Investing in foreclosures for Rental income. Many of the same rules apply and many guidelines remain constant. As with any type of investment the point at which you enter will determine how profitably you exit. The single largest distinction between real estate and stocks, bonds, mutual funds or precious metal is that Real Estate allows the Investor the opportunity to have a more direct and immediate impact on the Investment vehicle (the house) through rehab, paint, carpet, etc. This article in this series on Real Estate Investing will demonstrate how to quickly make an assessment of a potential Real Estate investment.

The guide should allow the average investor to make a rapid and well-thought-out decision. An informed investor will not "lose out" because of third-party factors such-as obtaining appraisals or contractor/repair people. An aggressive, proactive approach by the Investor can reduce the time it takes to obtain properties. A passive approach or an offhand attitude does not promote good opportunities. Remember, work WITH your agent and get pro-active!

How to determine Equity

The old adage about the only the three words in business being "Location, Location, Location" is as true as ever. In Real Estate, however, those three words are "Equity, Equity, Equity". The difference between what is owed on a property and its Market Value is called equity. As an investor, the goal is to buy for less than the full value and sell for market value and make a profit in the process. So at what point does caution balance against risk to make a profit?

A strong equity position is generally targeted at 25% after repairs. An equity position less than 25% can work for rental investments, but for resale purposes 25% is a safe figure. In order to determine if 25% after repairs can be achieved there are only three variables that need to be weighed in the mind of an investor.

1. How much can I get it for?
2. How much can I sell it for?
3. How much will it cost to repair it?

It is not difficult to obtain answers to these questions as long as the readily available data can be quickly and accurately distilled into usable information. By using the following guide and examining each property in terms of these three variables it should not take more than fifteen minutes to determine if a particular foreclosure is a wise investment.
How much can I get it for?

First, ask what your agent knows about the particular foreclosured property.

1. How long has it been on the market? (Not vacant, but available for sale)
2. Can Investors bid on it? (Some properties are for owner/occupants only)
3. What does your agent think? (A good agent is worth his/her weight in gold.)

Second, look at the property yourself.

Is it a "fixer upper?" Is it "market-ready?" The cost to make a property ready to sell has to be considered as part of the cost of buying a property. Usually an eyeball will tell you how much of a commitment in funds will be required.

Third, be sure that you are willing to own the property for the duration.

While it is certainly possible to get in and get out without a serious commitment of finances, be ready to own the property until it is sold. Some banks have regulations stating you must take possession of a property before you can sell it again. If, for whatever reason, your buyer is unable to complete his end of the transaction, you need to be prepared to be the owner of the investment property until it eventually sells.

Fourth, Bid quickly and often.

Nothing is more frustrating than investing a lot of effort into a project for nothing. When considering Investments, do not hesitate and risk missing an opportunity. If a deal looks so-so (only a 10% equity position, for instance) BID LOW to achieve that 25% potentiality. It could be a good rental, or even a modest resale. And there is always the chance you might win the bid.

In Investing, as in life, "he who hesitates is lost". After submitting a bid, start looking for the next Investment. Don't delay a possible "big dessert" while waiting on the first course.

How much can I sell it for?

As a general rule of thumb most Investors are motivated to purchase with a minimum 25% equity position (after repairs). This requires two separate deductions in order to be sure of a 25% equity position. First the true market value of the subject property (after repairs) and second, the repairs.

In order to determine the true market value without ordering a full-blown appraisal, (both time and financially prohibitive) an Investor must look at comparable sales. "Comps" are available from your agent or online from services like HomePriceCheck. While the online services may serve as a general guide the comparables your agent can obtain will take into consideration many more factors. Look at the entire neighborhood in print format. Then consider the most recent sales that reflect the style and neighborhood of the subject property and compare them to your Investment property.

Tip#1: The rewards are greatest when the investor is a knowledgeable, pro-active force in the process. Take an active roll in your investment. (Placing Advertisements and selling your own properties is covered in another article.)

Tip#2: The figure for how many days on market (DOM) a property was available before its eventual sale will be found on the MLS listing. Be sure to ask your Real Estate Agent for these figures specifically so that a determination can be made regarding the desirability of a particular neighborhood, style of home etc

Tip#3: Along with "Sold" properties a look should be taken (in print) at other properties that are still "available" or "withdrawn" from the market to determine the health of the market.
